Characteristics and applications of PC, PET, PMMA, PI, PP and other film sheets

1. PC film

1. Characteristics

An amorphous, odorless, non-toxic, highly transparent, colorless or slightly yellow thermoplastic engineering plastic with excellent physical and mechanical properties, especially excellent impact resistance, high tensile strength, bending strength, compression strength, low creep, and dimensional stability; it has good heat resistance and low temperature resistance, and has stable mechanical properties, dimensional stability, electrical properties and flame retardancy in a wide temperature range.

Using temperature: -30~120℃

Thickness: 0.07~1.0mm

Surface effect: glossy, sandy, brushed

2. Scope of application

Flame-retardant PC film is widely used in electronic components, electrical housings, switch panels, junction boxes and charger housings, automotive instruments and meters, and panel printing with flame retardancy requirements. Printing-grade frosted PC film is suitable for special printing, helmets, signs, nameplates, protective covers, etc. Anti-scratch PC film is used in window lenses of electronic products such as mobile phones, MP3, MP4, DVD, backlight sources, etc.

2. PET film

1. Characteristics

PET film is also known as high temperature resistant polyester film. It has excellent physical properties, chemical properties, dimensional stability, transparency, and recyclability. It has excellent mechanical properties, and its toughness is the best among all thermoplastics. Its tensile strength and impact strength are much higher than those of ordinary films, and it has good strength and dimensional stability. It also has excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, good chemical resistance, and oil resistance.

Use temperature: -60~120℃

Thickness: 0.125mm-0.35mm

Surface effect: smooth, sandy, brushed

2. Scope of application

PET film is divided into: PET heat shrink film, PET antistatic film, PET high gloss film, PET reflective film, chemical coating film, etc. Among them, chemical coating film is mainly used to improve the surface performance of PET film. Coating with acrylic emulsion can improve the printing suitability of PET, and coating with polyurethane aqueous solution can strengthen the bonding force between the aluminum plating layer and the PET base film; PET high gloss film is mainly used in high-end vacuum aluminum plating products and laser anti-counterfeiting base film due to its excellent mechanical and optical properties; PET reflective film is mainly used in reflective billboards, traffic reflective signs and industrial safety signs due to its excellent optical properties, aging resistance and good thermal stability.

III. PMMA film

1. Characteristics

PMMA film, also known as polymethyl methacrylate film, is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, with good chemical stability and weather resistance. Good comprehensive mechanical properties, ranking first among general plastics, and PMMA resin is not easy to produce sharp fragments when broken. Countries and regions such as the United States and Japan have made mandatory regulations in the law that PMMA resin must be used for glass used in primary and secondary schools and kindergartens.

Thickness: 0.5mm-8mm

2. Scope of application

PMMA film has a very wide range of applications and has been widely used in the automotive industry (signal light equipment, instrument panels, etc.), the pharmaceutical industry (blood storage containers, etc.), industrial applications (video discs, light diffusers), electronic product buttons (especially transparent ones), daily consumer goods (drink cups, stationery, etc.). At the same time, due to its excellent optical properties, the penetration of white light is as high as 92%. PMMA products have very low birefringence and are particularly suitable for making video discs and advanced optical lenses.

IV. PI film

1. Characteristics

PI film, also known as polyimide film, is a new type of high-temperature resistant organic polymer film. It is currently the best performing film-type insulating material in the world, with excellent mechanical properties, electrical properties, chemical stability, high radiation resistance, high temperature resistance and low temperature resistance.

Operating temperature: -269~280℃

Thickness: 0.0125 mm -0.25mm

Surface effect: golden mirror

2. Scope of application

PI is currently the best performing film-type insulating material in the world, and it is also the most heat-resistant variety among the currently industrialized polymer materials. Due to its superior comprehensive performance, it is widely used as a film in various fields such as aviation, navigation, spacecraft, rockets and missiles, atomic energy, and electronic and electrical industries.

V. PP film

1. Characteristics

PP film is divided into unstretched film and biaxially stretched film. Unstretched polypropylene film includes blown polypropylene film (IPP) produced by extrusion blow molding and extrusion cast polypropylene (CPP) produced by T-mold method. Biaxially oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) is a new type of film developed to replace cellophane. It has the characteristics of high mechanical strength, good toughness, good transparency and gloss.

Using temperature: -15~55℃

Thickness: 0.05 mm -0.35mm

Surface effect: excellent gloss, good transparency

2. Scope of application

PP film is used in various aspects of daily life with its excellent properties, including heat-sealing film for printing and composite bag making; ultra-thin high matte film for paper-plastic composite of books, advertising brochures, gift bags, etc.; back-coated silicone oil release film for plasters, labels, silent adhesive tapes and other adhesive products; isolation protection film for winding molding isolation protection of fishing rods, golf clubs and other industrial products; heat-sealable aluminum-coated film directly used for heat-sealed bag packaging of food; high-transparency film for high-transparency adhesive tape production and paper product composite, etc.

VI. PS film

1. Characteristics

PS film, also known as polystyrene film, has high transparency and glossiness, beautiful appearance, good printing performance and excellent metal evaporation performance; low water absorption, high permeability to gas and water vapor. PS film is divided into unstretched film and biaxially stretched film. Unstretched PS film is hard and brittle, and has little use value; biaxially stretched BOPS film has significantly improved physical and mechanical properties, and still maintains the original transparency and glossiness.

Thickness: 0.1mm-1mm

2. Scope of application

PS film is mainly used for thermoforming various cups, plates, dishes, fast food boxes, medicines and other packaging products. It is also commonly used for windows of paper box packaging and light food packaging. In addition, when laminated with metal foil, it can be used for insulation and EMI/FRI shielding. For example, PC light diffusion film has antistatic effect and good weather resistance, which is especially suitable for LCD backlight modules.

VII. Composite film

1. Characteristics

Composite film is a polymer film composed of two or more layers of different film materials. Through compounding, materials with comprehensive properties of each single material can be obtained. The substrates used are mainly various film plastics such as PE, PC, PP, PA, PVC and PET. In the process of production and application, it is often encountered that the characteristics of one material cannot meet the performance requirements of the product. This requires composite film materials with comprehensive performance. There are many kinds of such film materials, which are increasingly widely used due to their comprehensive and excellent performance.

PC+PET film: has the high mechanical properties of PC and the high temperature resistance of PET material;

PC+PMMA film: has the characteristics of high hardness, strong impact strength and aging resistance and the high-performance optical effect of PMMA;

PC+PBT film: excellent molding performance, excellent dynamic load capacity and chemical resistance, good printing and punching performance application range.
